Production diary

I am collecting a camera on the 29/11/12 and then filming from that day until 2/12/12 as I have to hand the camera back in on the 3/12/12.

29/11/12 - Today I am picking up the camera in order to film over the weekend, I can't film tonight though as I am at work.

30/11/12 - I am going to start filming when I get home from college which will be about 16:30, on this day I am hoping to film the scenes that will only have myself in them or the ones that have nobody in them due to the other actors having other commitments.

1/12/12 - On this day I am hoping to get the majority of the day time filming done as that will need to be done whilst it is light and at this time of the year day light is very limited and therefore I have to give my self as much time as possible to get these shots done, with this in mind I will be filming from around 9:00 till 15:00 because I am at work in the evening therefore will need to stop filming in order to get ready

2/12/12 - This will be my last day of filming for this weekend, this will be the day that the shots of all the friends on the night time will be taken, I will be shooting from  around 15:00 - the time it takes to get all of my shots done correctly, due to all of us having no other commitments it makes it easier to shoot all day.

3/12/12 - This is the day that I will be handing the camera back, it is also the day that I will upload all of my footage onto the editing suite and start my editing.

14/12/12 - I was able to take a camera away for this weekend and film my trailer. Unfortunately I could not film on the night however because I had fallen ill and therefore went to bed early which meant I couldn't film this night.

15/12/12 - Unfortunately I was still very ill on this day and again was unable to film due to me being in bed all day, this meant that I had already restricted my filming time down massively.

16/12/12 - I did start to feel a little better today but I was still not well enough to film which means that this weekend which I was planning to film on has been wasted as I have to hand the camera in tomorrow.

17/12/12 - My Mum said not to come into college today because I still don't feel/look great, however I have decided to come in as I can't afford to miss lessons at this point and I also had to hand the camera back in. I am planning to talk to my teacher during my lesson at 2:50 and I also plan to borrow the camera on Tueday and Wednesday as I finish college early on both of these days and I am therefore going to use this opportunity to catch up on the time I missed out on due to illness over the weekend.

19/12/12 - Due to there being no cameras available for tuesday night I was unable to film, I am taking a camera out tonight so that I can get the majority of my filming done.

20/12/12 - I filmed last night and got a lot of footage, I managed to film most of the opening sequence, and I also got a lot of the shots of Slender outside whilst the lighting wasn't to dark. I also got a few more shots that were able to be taken during last night.

Soundtracks for my Trailer

This may be included within the trailer because it has that eerie and creepy type of sound within it, and that is one of the conventions within horrors and therefore if I am to create a good portrayal of a horror within my trailer I must stick to the conventions.

I am also looking for a fast paced loud sound so that when my film trailer goes into the action sequence it can then get the fast tempo in order to create the right scene.

There are some points within this sound that could act as the drop into the action as it starts slow and then it goes very high pitched and then drops which would be a great lead into the action parts.

This music would go well for when the action starts and we start to get more shots faster and shorter, I believe it would fit in nicely to my trailer.

Changes to the storyline

Due to the difficulty of getting everyone together at the same time to film for my trailer, I have decided to tweak the storyline so that instead of the protagonist inviting his friends round and thats how he finds out about the game 'Slender', the way he finds out about the game is through a skype call with his friend, the friend will reccomend the game and that is how he will decide to play the game.

1st time filming, shots that went wrong

This shot will need reshooting as I didn't have a tripod and therefore the shot isn't still so in order for the shot to be successful I will have to shoot it with a tripod.

This shot has been shot as a mid shot when it would look a lot better as a close up and therefore i'm going to reshoot it so that the shot is better.

Equipment I am using

When filming my trailer I will be using this camera which I have borrowed from college. As they will have to be dialogue wthin the trailer it is good that this camera has a large microphone on it as then it will be able to pick up more sound. Other good features on this camera is the night mode feature which will be used for when I shoot in the cellar as that will make the shot look as though it has been shot in complete darkness. There is also the feature which allows you to focus in and out yourself as well, this may come in handy with some of the long shots which slender is in as this way it could make it look like the protagonist is really trying to focus there eyes to see what it is.

Target Audience

The target audience of my film trailer will be aged 16-24, which is an age were people are becoming adults and therefore are becoming more mature. With this age being my target age then I will be aiming my production at the S.E.G group 'E' as this age group will be either still in education or only just starting out in their job therefore won't have a lot of disposable income.

I posted polls on my blog to find out who my target audience will be, and the results I got are as follows; The majority of answers for gender were Male with 66% and female received 33%, on the poll for age 16-24 received 66% of the vote with the other 33% going to 35+ which means I am going to have to incorporate a theme which will be suited for both age groups however aim it at the majority vote of 16-24. Media and Journalism was the most studied subject from the subjects studied poll, which therefore shows that I will be able to put media techniques within the trailer which will be appreciated by others, as this was a multiple choice poll other subjects chosen included Drama and performing arts with 33% and Sports and science with 16%. When I asked which choice of genre was favoured the most picked genre was Comedy with 50% of the vote which therefore means the audience will want elements of comedy within the film trailer, other genres picked include Thriller at 33% and Romance with 16%. When I asked about how these people watched films I got results showing that both Cinema and At home with DVD's and Blu-rays received 83% and in a close second was on TV such as Sky, BBC and ITV which had 66% of the vote and via download had 16% of the vote, this poll was again a multiple choice one, hence the percentages going over 100%, this poll however shows that people will see my trailer advertised in the cinema and on TV so I could therefore focus my marketing there. When I asked what aspect of a film they enjoyed most 50% responded with the narrative/storyline which means that whilst people like elements of comedy within the film they also want a good narrative which can be hard to find a good mix of them so I will have to try and produce something that allows the mix to be good enough so that people want to see the film. 33% of the respondents favourited the characters the most within the film, so I shall therefore have to produce a character that is easily taken to, so the audience can get emotionally attached. My final question was about social class and 50% of respondents said they were in the 'E' category which means they are either students or don't have a lot of disposable income. 33% said they were in the 'B' category and 16% said they were in the 'C1' category, this shows that some of my audience will be able to spend money and not worry about it E.G. they will be able to go see it at the cinema and buy the DVD.

Costume for Slender

To create my slender man costume I am using a white morphsuit so that it gives the effect of the pale white face that Slender man has. I am also using a black tie as he wears a black tie within the video game and I would like to get as close to an exact recreation as I can.

Slender man is seen wearing a suit and in this case I am using a suit as part of the costume when I film, the suit Slender man wears is also black which is therefore why I am using a black suit jacket

As I said before Slender man wears a suit and no suit is complete without trousers, therefore I am using a black pair of trousers in order to correctly portray Slender man.

This is what the whole costume looks like together however because it is just layed down rather than being worn, it looks a bit flimsy and a bit rubbish however when its on it will look different.

This picture shows that even from a close up you can see no facial features and therefore is a correct portrayal of Slender man, It also shows what the costume looks like being worn in the top half of the body

This picture shows how it all looks being worn, It shows how the face matches the pale white and also no facial features, it also shows the pale hands which aren't life like and it also shows what the suit and tie looks like when it is all on, I believe that this is a good recreation of Slender man.

A description of the shots within the trailer and also added bits to complete the storyline

My idea for the storyline is that a boy called 'Adam' has the house to himself for the night and his friends 'Sam' and 'Jack' come over for the night. The friends are just having a typical 'boys night' until one of the friends, 'Jack' tells the others about a game that he heard about called 'Slender', he tells them that the character within the game 'Slender Man' stalks you down until he finally abducts and kills you and if you don't believe that the myth of the 'Slender Man' is true, he comes to get you. The friends then decide to play the game and decide to stop when the character jumps out and scares them, however they refuse to believe that the myth is real. 'Adam' then decides to shut the curtains as it's dark outside and its freaking the friends out, when shutting the curtains he scans outside whilst shutting them and for a split second thinks he sees the character out of the game outside before looking away, he's a bit worried so decides to look again and sees there is nothing there. The friends then get takeaway to carry on the conventions of a typical 'boys night in'. 'Sam' then goes over to pay the delivery man and as he does his eyes wander over the shoulder of the delivery man to a Lamp Post and see the character again just stood dead still. The delivery man then coughs to get 'Sams' attention again and looks stern as he wants the money so he can carry on with his job, once he's paid the delivery man, 'Sam' then looks back over the shoulder to find that the figure has disappeared again like the first time. 'Sam' and 'Adam' then say to 'Jack' that it may sound weird but they think they saw the figure of 'Slender Man' as they say this they hear a huge bang and metallic noises, they go to check it out and see that the door is now locked by a huge padlock and they now go back to the other room and conclude that 'Slender Man' is after them and is now in the house. The lights then turn off however nothing happens, as 'Jack' manages to light a candle 'Slender Man' is stood right behind him and the candle then gets put out again taking us into darkness however this time 'Jack' is taken. 'Sam' and 'Adam' are a little shook up about the whole thing however after getting themselves back in order, 'Sam' reveals that the only way to destroy 'Slender Man' is with a bullet to the heart. 'Sam' and 'Adam' then go and get 'Adams' dads gun as he is a police officer. As they do this 'Slender Man' once again confronts them however this time Adam shouts 'What do you want!?' in which 'Slender Man' proceeds to say with his only lines within the whole thing apart from some groans and shouts 'Your souls' after this 'Adam' and 'Sam' manage to get away however in the end 'Adam' leaves the house without 'Sam' due to 'Sam' selflessly telling 'Adam' to 'Save himself'. As 'Adam' leaves he runs down an alley close to his home however once he gets to the spotlight in the middle he sees 'Slender Man' at the other side so he turns to run the other way and again sees 'Slender Man' at the other side, 'Adam' therefore turns around a second time which as he does so puts him face to face with 'Slender Man' and this is were the trailer ends as it cuts to a black screen.

Codes and Conventions of Horrors

Codes and conventions of horrors:
  • Secluded Location - Horrors are usually done in a lonely location so that there is nobody to help. These include; The woods, House in the middle of nowhere, a ghost town etc. An example could be House at the end of the Street
  • Characters usually forget about the threat - There is usually a danger in a horror and the main character(s) (protagonist(s)) often forget about the threat or tackle it head on. E.g. Paranormal Activity, they know they're being haunted however they film and try to communicate with the demon rather than getting rid of it.
  • Power cuts - A classic convention of Horrors is that the power goes out just before a killing. E.g. House at the end of the street when they're in the basement and the lights are out whilst the antagonist tries to kill the protagonist.
  • Phone lines are cut - This way there is no way of communicating with anyone such as the police or friends. Another way this can be used is to have no signal on a mobile phone. E.g.
  • Someone investigates a strange noise - There will be a noise that is heard and is a little bit suspicious and then one person goes to investigate it which usually leads to a scare. E.g. In Paranormal Activity when they hear a smash downstairs, Micah goes down to check it.
  • Victim falls over - There is always the classic runaway from the predator and the prey falls over letting them closer. A well known convention within Horrors E.g. Freddie vs Jason, at the start when the girl is running through the forest and falls over.
  • Vehicle wont start - Another one that happens whilst being chased is the vehicle not starting, such as jumping in a car and it not starting which again leads to the killer getting closer, another way to use this convention is to have the protagonist drop their keys. E.g. Zombieland when Columbus drops his keys when trying to get in the car.
  • The fake scare - This is used in nearly every Horror film that has ever been made, it is where the sound, cinematography and editing are all used as though there is going to be a scare and it all drops down and there is nothing there or its something else. E.g. House at the end of the street when the car pulls up you think she's going to get kidnapped and fear the worst but then it's just the neighbour offering a lift.
  • Warning goes unheeded - This is when the Main character(s) defy a warning and do what they are warned about anyways. E.g. Again in paranormal activity they know not to agitate the demon however they do.
  • The Shortcut - Even if there is a significant amount more danger by going through the shortcut it doesn't matter as they will always take the shortcut which leads to danger. E.g. The Shortcut
  • Freaky Music - There is always music on the soundtrack to freak the audience out. E.g. Insidious with Tiptoe through the tulips - Tiny Tim, when the little Victorian boy puts the record player on and that is played.
  • Crescendo - There is often a build up of instruments in the music which finally come to a crescendo when the scare is happening. E.g. Jaws, when the shark attacks you get the build up of the motif to the crescendo which makes you jump.

Change in genre choice

I have decided to change my genre to a horror film, I have decided to do this because I have been having more ideas that would go into the horror genre rather than a drama. Some inspirations I've had for a horror genre involve these different film trailers:

Paranormal Activity has been one of the most successful horror films and has therefore been a big influence to me especially because it was made with such a small budget and filmed within a household so I believe I can make a trailer in the same sort of way.

I have also taken inspiration off of the film sinister as well because in the film there is a man whos moved into a new house and finds some videos of the previous owners and there is bughuul or Mr. Boogie in every video and the new owner sees this bughuul and it starts to affect the kids and it there are many scary and frightening techniques which leads to a freaky horror. The reason this has influenced me is because I plan on using a reccuring figure like bughuul in my trailer.

Another text that I have taken inspiration from is the game 'Slender' which is about a mythical creature that stalks, abducts and kills people, this therefore is an idea in which I can develop in order to create the danger within my trailer

Reconstruction of a media text

For our reconstruction of a media text, we had a choice of the music videos for 'The Script song - The man who can't be moved', and the for the 'Nirvana song - Sliver', there was also a choice of two film trailers 'The Lucky One' and '127 Hours'. Due to the difficulty of reconstructing the two film trailers becuase of the rock climbing that would be to hard to get a reconstruction of in '127 Hours' and they were explosions within 'The Lucky One' trailer so again it would be to hard to create a reconstruction. So we had to choose between either 'Nirvana' and 'The Script' and we chose 'Nirvana' our reconstruction took place in the green room at college.

We made our own drum kit out of a stool and some boxes as we couldn't get a drum kit together, we also borrowed a bass guitar and microphone from the music department. We used Harley Young, Sam Shaw, Daniel Williamson and myself. Harley Young was the main singer within the video therefore he did the lip syncing, I was the drummer and therefore had to time when to hit the drum so that it matched the beat. Danny was playing the bass guitar and therefore he had to look like he could actually play the guitar. Sam was one of the props and we put him in a monkey onesie which and gave him two make shift cymbals which he had to bang together in order to recreate the video. After we had finished filming we all took turns in using the editing suites so we all got an idea on how they worked. We were able to get a background similar to the one in the video by editing the green screen with an image of a bedroom. This is the finished piece:

We also made another reconstruction however this one was more of a joke, however it did turn out well. This was a recreation of the cadburys advert were the gorilla plays the drums, we did this as we had spare time and had the monkey onesie and the make shift drum kit and decided that we would make another reconstruction. This time Sam Shaw was the protagonist and he had to time the beat of the drum to the video so it looked correct. This is the piece that was finally created for the gorilla recreation after editing had taken place.

Codes and Conventions of Film trailers

Film Trailers can have their each and own different set of codes and conventions depending on the genre of the film. Although there are still some conventions that are used throughout all film trailers which are seen as a guide on how to make a successful film. There are different ways in which you can put into your work, these include; Cinematography, such as camera shots and angles can connotate certain things therefore making it a code. Another method that you can use is editing, with editing you can use things such as continuity or montage to represent different things and you could also use the speed of the editing. Mise-en-scene is also another way in which you can use codes and conventions through items such as props and costume. Lastly the sound can also be used to add codes and conventions into your work. All of these will be needed in a film trailer in order to make the film successful. On average a film Trailer will last around 2:30 minutes, that is not a lot of time to put all of these things in so therefore they have to really think why and how they can put these methods into their work.

Cinematography can be used in many different ways to represent codes and conventions, one of these is close ups, these are usually used in a film trailer to represent the protagonist (main character), this way before we have even watched the film we have gained the knowledge that the person shown is the lead character and it also gets us emotionally attached to the character so we want to go and see the film for the character. They can also use establishing shots so that we know where the character is, this way we get a feel for how the film may pan out. A good example of both of these techniques in a film trailer is ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, as within the first 20 seconds we get these two shots which give us the feel that the man in the foreground of the close up two shot is the Protagonist and the man in the background could be a big part of the film and we also can find out that we’re in a game show.

Other shots that can be used include over the shoulder shots which can sometimes show the protagonist and what they have to do, or the mess that has been made by them, this is usually used in action films or thrillers. An example of this would be ‘From dusk till Dawn’ as it shows a building in the background being blown up and the two characters walking away to show they’ve done that and they’re getting away.

Going back to ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, not only is there Cinematography techniques used within the trailer to show codes and conventions there are also Editing methods used as well such as, Non-diegetic elements, as in the trailer it shows on the screen a question and it gives you four answers, this then builds on the earlier code that we are in the setting of a game show and takes us that one step further to that we’re on ‘who wants to be a millionaire’ as the question is set as if it would be a question on the show, not only does it show us this but It also gives us the storyline as it shows the question saying how did Jamal Malik win 20 million rupees and then gives you the answers to choose from and it then give you the answer saying ‘it is destiny’ so therefore we now know that it is about the man in the foreground, Jamal Malik? Winning 20 million rupees on who wants to be a millionaire because it was his destiny and we know all this because of the codes and conventions that are used throughout the trailer.

There is also a fast paced montage edit used in the trailer of the stuff that’s happened in his life so far which gives you the feel that everything has rushed by leading towards this one moment in his life, during this montage you see other characters which you can tell will be a big part of the film such as a brother which will be his companion on his life journey and also what could be a love interest or ‘one true love’. These are again all found out through the use of the codes and conventions within the trailer.

Mise-en-scene is also used in order to show codes and conventions throughout the film as you can see here in the Slumdog millionaire trailer as it shows the setting of when he was younger and the clothes he is dressed in and this shows that he comes from a poor area and that they don’t have much money, therefore we feel sorry for him as he has been brought up with not much money which gives us an emotional attachment towards the character, the image from the trailer also shows them jumping from a rooftop which tells us also that they haven’t had a very safe upbringing.

Lastly Sound is another way in which Codes and conventions are used as there is an upbeat soundtrack playing in the background whilst there is the montage of his childhood and he always looks really happy however the music changes to a slower song when the girl ‘Latika’ is left behind from the train which shows that from that moment on he hasn’t been the same because he hasn’t been with his one true love so we get the feel that everything he’s done from that moment onwards has been done so that he can find Latika again.

Overall Codes and Conventions are used in film trailers in order to show what the genre of the film is and also, how the story will pan out throughout the film and why it is going to go like that. Therefore codes and conventions are what makes up the film trailer so that the audience can then read them to understand the film.

Media Studies Skill Development Evaluation Essay

My foundation portfolio started off with a preliminary task of making a magazine representing the college and aimed at the students in that college. This task was done so that we were able to build on our skills using Adobe Photoshop and photography before we did our main piece of AS coursework. This way we had experience with it and also could do better when it came to our main task. After we had done this task we moved onto our main AS piece of coursework were we had to make a front cover, contents page and a double page spread of a music magazine. The music magazine needed to look professional and good enough to be published so therefore I had to research other magazines and look at the conventions of them which included having a good consistent house style, focus on only one specific genre of music and also making sure my house style and genre of music matched, I then had to apply these to my product to make sure it looked as professional as the real magazines. I had to decide on some demographics for my target audience and I came up with these; I was going to aim the magazine at people aged 15-24 as they are the age that I believe are most involved and interested with music, the SEG would therefore have to be class E – C2. I aimed towards achievers with my psychographics as at this age they may still be looking towards their career path and not know what to do so therefore I want to inspire them to achieve in the music world.

Whilst doing both of my magazines I had to learn a lot of terminology such as ‘Masthead’, ‘Splash’, ‘Teasing Contents’ and many more, this was so that when it came to writing about my product it would look a lot more professional as I would be referring to it with its actual name. I also had to show that I could show my planning and designs in different ways when doing this I used programmes such as ‘Prezi’. ‘Prezi’ is used for making slideshows and is easy to use and a brilliant piece of software, it allows you to make your slideshow very easily and it also lets you choose the path which your presentation will take, it also allows you to start from a blank canvas and do everything yourself or it has templates for you to use. I also used ‘Go Animate’. ‘Go Animate’ is different to ‘Prezi’ as it allows you to show your research or planning in a conversation between animated people so that it gets it across in a conversation format rather than just text on a screen, therefore it gives you a different way to get your information across.

I had to use Adobe Photoshop for both my college magazine and my music magazine. I had very little knowledge on how to work Photoshop when I first started my college magazine; I knew what you could do on Photoshop however I had no knowledge on how to actually make it happen. One of the things that Photoshop can do which I knew about was its ability to manipulate images, therefore when I produced my front cover I had to take a picture of my model myself therefore I had to get rid of any imperfections as the front cover model of any magazine always looks ‘perfect’, this meant I had to manipulate my own image by using Photoshop to make my front cover model ‘perfect’. I did this by using the ‘spot removal tool’ to get rid of a few blemishes on the face of my model; I also used different layers of the image to make the model look like he had perfect skin, I did this by using the ‘blur’ tool and also changing the brightness on different layers which made the skin look more porcelain and gave it a really good look. Another tool I used was the ‘clone stamp’ tool, this allowed me to fill in any gaps that had been created such as if there was a gap in the hair of the model I could use this tool and clone some hair from somewhere else on the head and then clone it where it was missing so therefore it would look like the hair of the model is perfect and there are no gaps in it, this tool can also be used to get rid of spots too, however it is best to use the ‘spot removal’ tool for that.

Altogether in my foundation Portfolio my skills have improved massively, I started my AS year with no previous experience and improved my skills a lot. I learnt how to use Photoshop to manipulate images so that they look professional and make the model get that ‘perfect’ look and at the start of the year I had never used this software before. I also learnt about the terminology which as a brand new media student at AS had no knowledge about and I believe that I managed to get the grasp of it all very quickly and could analyse a magazine for conventions and label them with the correct terminology. I also improved my skills on both Prezi and Go Animate as again I had no experience on either of these products and I managed to produce presentations on both of them which pleased the teacher. I also believe that my skills in taking a picture increased as well as I now know what angles to take the pictures at to connotate different things and therefore know what angle to pick when doing different products. Overall I believe that as I started the year with no experience in media my skills have improved greatly as I have shown what skills I have improved on or learnt throughout the year and I now think that I am now able to use these skills in many different ways to produce and analyse different media texts.

Audience key terms

Qualitative Data

This is data you get from collection methods for example; questionnaires and surveys

Quantitative Data

This is information that has been collected based on a specific aspect, the stats are collected through methods such as tally charts, surveys and experiments.

Demographic Data

This data describes a member of the audience's social status. The demographics are gathered from their social class (SEG,) gender, ethnicity and level of education. This information determines the target audience for a product, helping to present and market the product with the greatest effect.

Psychographic Data
This particular data shows what qualities of the individual person, this includes attributes such as attitudes, values, beliefs and opinions. This information adds to the demographics of the target audience, therefore having a better effect at reaching the audiences needs.

My Genre Choice

My choice of genre is going to be a drama. I have chosen drama because an audience tend to get more emotionally involved to a drama as you can make it a Romantic drama so the audience will get wrapped up in the romance as that's how they want their romantic life to be. You can also make it a comedy drama were again the audience will find themselves laughing along putting themselves in that situation. Along with the emotional attachment to the drama, it can also bring great enjoyment to an audience as they like to guess whats going to happen and they like when they can be shocked by an ending they didn't think of but also when they can correctly guess an ending.

I have chosen to put Forrest Gump on here as it is an absolute classic Comedy Drama that everyone has seen. As it is a sub-genre of my chosen Genre I believe it is a great example to have up there as it was highly successful and has one of the best storylines a film has ever had, in my opinion. Therefore I will be trying to get a storyline in my trailer that will also be enjoyed.

I have chosen to put New Years Eve on here as again it is part of sub-genres of the Genre I have chosen however it has both aspects of Comedy and Romance in the film and this is what I would like to do when making my Film Trailer. It also has many different little storylines throughout its main storyline which I think is really interesting.

I have chosen to include The Lucky One as during the trailer it has bits of editing what I really like and would like to include in my trailer, these are when they cut to interviews with the Author of the book, the stars of the film and the director and I would like to include something like that in my trailer.
